Michael Graves

Architect and designer Michael Graves was born in Indianapolis, USA, in the 1930s. He received his bachelor's degree in design from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1958. A year later, he got his master's degree in architecture from Harvard University. All this was the beginning of a successful career. After he finished college, Graves decided to live and study in Italy for two years at the American Academy in Rome.

When he subsequently returned to the United States, Graves had become a great supporter of modernism. Consequently, this was evident in his work in the early 1960s. He made extensive use of white, geometric shapes. In 1980, the Italian brand Alessi invited Graves to collaborate on the ‘Coffee and Tea Piazza’ project. The set he designed for this was a resounding success and sold the best of all the sets. Other products he designed for Alessi such as whistling kettles can be found here, among others.
